A particularly charming, spacious and well-designed town house featuring three double bedrooms, roof terraces, courtyard garden and swimming pool.
Umma House was substantially renovated and extended in traditional Swahili style five years ago by Spanish architect Urko Sanchez, who also designed and built Lamu House Hotel, Milele House and several other very attractive private homes in Lamu and Shela.
It is situated in a quiet ‘uptown’ neighbourhood of Old Lamu, close to Jannat House Hotel and Cafe Bustani. There are panoramic views across the town and the Lamu Channel from shady, makuti-thatched terraces on both the second and third floors of the house.
The house is entered from an imposing daka porch with ornate carved front door. The downstairs accommodation includes entrance hall, large and well-equipped ‘eat-in’ kitchen, dining room opening onto the garden, bathroom with shower, and ample storage and cupboard space.
Outside on the ground floor is a secluded, paved courtyard garden with a lovely plunge pool and surrounding seating and lounging areas. The pool flows into a traditional enclosed gallery with an entire four-metre long wall of spectacular zidaka niches, together with bar area and shower. Above is another very nice and private makuti-thatched sitting area.
Upstairs are one twin and two double bedrooms, each with a particularly large and attractively laid-out ensuite bathroom. The second floor master bedroom suite also incorporates a private sitting room and terraced walkway.
Much thought, time and good taste has gone into outfitting Umma House as nicely as possible. It is comprehensively equipped, and filled with traditional Lamu furniture, attractive soft furnishings, pictures, lamps and other fixtures and fittings from Kenya and the Middle East – all of which are included in the sale.
